Classical Dance (Odissi) Classes
in Cuttack
The classical dance of Odisha, taught from first position to full repertoire.

About the Course
Odissi, the graceful classical dance of Odisha, is known for its fluid movements, sculpturesque poses, and deep spiritual roots. It enhances body balance, rhythm, and emotional expression while preserving India's rich heritage.
Odissi is one of the eight classical dance forms recognised in India, and it belongs to Odisha. Its vocabulary is built on two basic stances — the tribhangi, a three-bend posture, and the chauka, a square stance drawn from the image of Lord Jagannath. Students at Avinayana begin with footwork and basic bhangis before moving to full items, learning the hand gestures (mudras), eye movements and expression (abhinaya) that let a dancer tell a story without a word.

Common Questions
- What age can my child start Odissi?
- Most children start between five and seven years, when they can hold a posture and follow rhythm. There is no upper age limit — we teach adult beginners as well.
- How long does it take to learn Odissi?
- Basic footwork and posture take a few months. A student typically performs a full item on stage within one to two years of regular practice. Odissi is a lifelong form, so training continues well beyond that.
- What should a student wear to class?
- A practice saree or salwar for regular classes, with ghungroo once the instructor says the student is ready. Full costume is only needed for performances.
